Monday Morning

How nice it was to wake up to your supportive comments and my inbox full of sympathetic emails. Thank you! Thank you!

Hate to even post this, but last night was as bad as the night before. Maybe even worse. Bryce and I are not even sure our oldest slept at all. Today we're getting outside as much as possible and, again, sticking to our daily schedule.

Thanks again for your sweet comments. They really do make a difference.

sounds like you are having a tough time, we always have a hard time adjusting coming back from the UK - on the way there is not so bad. Are you letting the girls nap during the day? if so, DON'T, hard as it might be. Black out curtains might help too. It's not just the jet-lag of course, it is being somewhere strange but it is hard to make the place familiar when you are living out of suitcases. It will get better.....

as I have shared before we live in Europe too and have a hard time going back and forth from the States... it takes a good 2 weeks. Sorry but true... hang in there!

Hello there!

I remember reading on an earlier post that you were having trouble with the oven (and the manual in a different language).

If you have a scanner, I can type out a translation for you (I speak French and German). I'd be happy to help!

how long have you been there? with my experience i think it will take 2 good weeks to get the kids turned around. and if you can find your kids favorite cereal. that will help make the transition easier for all of you.

Thinking good thoughts for you. Get lots of sunshine and activity during the day. Dark and calm stuff at night. It is supposed to take one day for every hour of time change. We adopted our son from Korea, and it took us about 2 weeks to fully adapt to the time. Hang in there!

two of my best friends are american expats living in Australia... one of the things I like to do is to help with shopping.. my daughters school has many international students and I have helped many a parent..

my advice is to find a friend to shop with and cook with. I did this for my best friend who was from texas.. of course most american things are available here.. and the labels are in english but it is still so hard when products are not recognisable, and key ingredients are missing (mexican ingredients and cheese was hardest for her.. we have lots of cheese here but you feel sad when it isnt the same)

I gave her thoughts on my favourite butter, bread, yoghurt, icecream, chocolate etc etc... i cooked once or twice a week with her to start with and by the end of her two years living here she was a better cook than I using australian ingredients.. she often took food to sick, pregnant, needy at church using my recipes

so find a native friend as quick as you can and I think it might help a little

sorry if what I just said sounds hard.... I think my friends and I are lucky as we are LDS (mormons) and wherever we travel in the world we find congregations where church is the same the world over.. we have instant friends/acquaintances if we moved to a new country.

This is how I met my friend from texas one week after she arrived and we (from church) seem to be quick to give our time and talents to eachother.. of course it might be difficult for you to find a friend in a week to cook often with you :)

I hope it all settles down for you soon.. thanks for this real reality check for those of us who were jealous (cough cough.. me) and so desperately want to live overseas..it is hard!!

oh and one more thing

why not muffin tin breakfast/dinner/lunch until you work out how to cook??

veges, fruit, cheese, crackers that ll keep the kids alive ;)

Things will be fine!

My first family meal when I lived in in China was boiled chicken--beak, feet, and all! All the ideas about fresh fruits and veggies are great. Your kids will adjust soon--or they'll get hungry enough to eat anything (like I did)!!

Give yourself a couple of weeks with the sleeping, too. It's hard, but living by your new schedule is the most important, no matter how sleepy you are!
