Little Difference #5

Little Difference #5 - UHT Milk

I mentioned this type of milk after Bryce and I returned from our preview trip - shelves and towers of milk sold without any type of refrigeration. It was quite different. Had to mention it again as I'm now a total convert and only buy this type of milk. My grocery shopping mentor showed me the organic, non fat, UHT milk at Auchan and I haven't bought anything else since. In Luxembourg, UHT milk is sold in 1 liter plastic bottles, 1 liter cartons and also "juice" box size. It is not sold in amounts larger than 1 liter, neither is fresh milk. UHT milk does not have vitamin D added to it, like most of the milk in the U.S.

UHT stands for ultra-high-temperature. It is a sterilization process where the milk is heated to an incredibly high temperature for a few seconds. This kills the spores in the milk and also preserves its nutrients due to the reduced processing time. It has a shelf life of 6-9 months. Apparently UHT milk has been very successful in Europe but has not caught on in the U.S.

We are not big milk drinkers, in fact, I probably consume the most with my morning bowl of Fruit and Fiber cereal. So milk is not a big thing for our family at all - another reason why it's so nice to just have it sitting in the cupboard in case we need it.

BTW, I just pulled my first batch of bread pudding out of the oven. Mmmmmm.

Does it taste just the same? My aunt gets this, but I'm afraid of it. (Silly American)

both are very popular in Australia... we have fresh milk section and UHT milk section... I buy both.. it is great to have milk in the cupboard in the case of running out of fresh milk

and sunny.. I don't think they taste the same.. I dont particularly like UHT milk (esp when at room temp) so I always make mine very cold and then it is fairly similar... I think it seems richer in a way or something like that??

I don't like the taste of UHT milk (but I like milk). To me it has a weird aftertaste. I'm picky about milk brands though - I tasted the difference between them. I know, wacky!

Nonrefrigerated milk. Hmmmm that would take some getting used too. But I bet it would be yummy on some of that chocolate cereal you posted a few days back.

Bread Pudding. Sounds Yummy.

Do they have places where you can recycle all the plastic bottles the milk comes in?

as an American in Europe, I have to say UHT milk is not for me. I think that it just tastes a bit...off. But then, I do drink soy milk, so...

It was so obivous to me because i've always drunk organic UHT milk and i didn't even realize (after 10 trips to the US) it could be different in other countries ! and by the way we have "vitamin D+" UHT milk in France, also "lactose reduced"...etc....

your heart garland is a hit ! i want to make it !

You know the little boxes of milk that you can get at Starbucks or grocery stores in the states? The ones with the cows on them - can't remember their names - Horizon I think? But the are UHT milk. The don't have to be refrigerated. My boys get them whenever I hit the Starbuck's in town.

ps - love your blog, and am excited for your quilt demo as I just cut up all of my boys' baby clothes into squares with the hopes of making them each a quilt. I've never done it before!
