Little Difference #6

Little Difference #6 - Buying Produce

In the grocery stores here (and all of Europe, I think) you must get your produce items weighed in the produce department before you check out. Many produce items are sold by the unit not the weight so those can be popped right into your grocery cart. But things sold by weight, must be weighed and priced first. There is a little station set up in the produce department with a clerk and a few scales. You just place your bag down on the scale, the clerk types the code, places the UPC sticker on your bag, and then you plop it into your cart and go on your merry way.

We did it that way (except it was self-serve) when we lived in Ithaca at Wegman's. It was so handy to know exactly what you paying for your produce so you could make better budget decisions and it made the lines go so much faster.

I love reading your "differences" posts!

Our local grocery store used to do that when I was little. I always remember the produce clerk looking sooo very bored, but my brother and I always fought over who got to have the veggies weighed as it seemed like such a grown up thing to do :)

that's how our local grocery does it too...the people who help out in the produce section are always so nice...it's another task for my kids to hand over the produce. i didn't know it was european:-)

Yes, I am Australian, this happened to us for the first time in Italy,we were actually treated quite rudely when we appeared at the checkout with unweighed goods. Unfortunately at times you don't know whether you are to weigh the goods or not, it's hard to work out pricing unless there are pictures of the fruit and veg to if oyu don't speak the language!

That's the way it was at all the grocery stores that I ever went to (living in two different states, three different cities) for all my life until around when I was a teenager or so.

Funny -- I forgot all about it until I read your post.

in Australia the check out person does that at the end.. it might be good to know how much it costs before.. but that is just another thing to do in an already busy day isnt it ?
