Day trip to Metz

Last week I was fortunate enough to sneak off to Metz, France with two friends. We planned our get-away while the kids were at school, perfect as Metz is only 40 minutes from Luxembourg City. This was our second school-day field trip to Metz and I have a feeling it won't be the last.

Have you heard of Metz? It is a beautiful city located in the Lorraine region of France. At two times in history it was taken over by the Germans, the last being in 1940. Metz was returned to the French after WWII. There is amazing Gothic cathedral, St. Etienne, that has stained glass windows designed by Marc Chagall. It is as massive and impressive as any of the more famous Gothic cathedrals. In May of this year Pompidou Center - Metz will open. Like the one in Paris (that I absolutely love) it will house contemporary art. I can't wait to go and take a peek.
We spent our time shopping, talking and having a long, leisurely lunch. It was pure heaven. The highlight for me was our walk through the indoor market. I love markets anyway, but it was such a treat to walk through with people as interested in all the offerings as I was. We looked at every bit of produce, cheese and lingered over the fresh fish. It was a lovely day. One that I hope to repeat again (and again).Did you know frog legs are found with the seafood? I wouldn't have guessed it, but then again frogs do spend time in the water.

I'm jealous! Though I shouldn't be as I will be heading to France shortly and will also be able to enjoy wandering through the markets (my absolute favourite thing to do in the world!)

Enjoy!!

At those prices, it might be cheaper to catch the frogs oneself. Though, I am not sure I am brave enough to try frog.

It was such a fun day! Can't wait to go back when the weather is warmer, cafés spilling out onto the streets, with more of an outdoor vibe...and don't even get me started about the Pompidou! C x

That sounds so wonderful. Very jealous! I can hardly manage a trip to Ballard since preschool is only 2 1/2 hours and shops don't open until 1/2 hour before pick-up!

Fun! I am enjoying my new one "day off" a week. I have from 9:20 until 3:00 "off." I wish I could say I have gotten a lot done. I'd love a girlfriends trip to Metz!

LOL...at first I thought those frogs legs were some kind of animal testicles! I was going to say "this is where I get off the ride! When there are testicles next to the shrimp...I've seen enough!"

Marcelle - I'm so glad you're "back" Where are you going in France? I was just telling a friend this weekend that I've turned into an official Francophile. As such, I'd love to hear about your trip!

Likeschocolate - yes, they are expensive. I did notice that. But then again, a kilo (2.2lbs) must be quite a lot of frogs' legs.

Christina - must.get.a.date.on.the.calendar!!

Mamamonkey - I remember the days. Your time will come ;)

Susan - days off are not for getting things done?!? It's called a day "off"

Mom - YES!!

Jessica - put Metz on your list. High on your list!

Mamallama - I agree they don't look like what you'd expect frog legs to look like - these are "fleshier" than others I've seen.

The indoor market reminds me of one in Florence. How lucky for you that you got to stroll through with fellow food market devotees!
