Looking for a way to get more sugar, artificial color and chemicals into your child? No, I'm not either but I just had to try this frosting idea from my daughter's preschool teacher. I hadn't heard of it, but I bet you have (I tend to be behind the curve, I'm afraid.) Kool aid flavored frosting? Yup, it makes frosting that tastes like candy in unnaturally bright colors.
I bought orange Kool Aid (you need 1 pack of unsweetened drink powder) a can of white frosting and a boxed cake mix and I was on my way to processed heaven. The frosting tasted just like I added Tang to it. It was very, very zippy but not as neon orange as I'd expected. I paired the frosting with chocolate cake to make a Mandarin Chocolate Halloween treat. The result: very strange. Not quite the subtle orange needed to compliment chocolate. I think vanilla cake would have been better to make a Dreamsicle inspired cupcake.
Bottom Line: A huge hit with kids! Fun for a once-in-awhile treat. Skip the orange/chocolate combo and try something else . . .
