My oldest has been eyeing these at the grocery store for some time. I remembered seeing a recipe for Mother's Circus Animal Cookies on the Crafty Crow (originally posted by Vanilla Joy) and suggested we make some instead of buy. Secretly, I'd been wanting to try out the recipe anyway. Combines my two current interests, sugar and nostalgia. Who doesn't remember eating these as a kid?!
We purchased a tiny cookie cutter set, butterflies and flowers, bought the ingredients and were off! I used the sugar cookie recipe provided by Vanilla Joy (I used butter not shortening.) It is the best I've ever tried! The taste was heaven, literally. This is the sugar cookie recipe I'll use from now on! However, even after being chilled for 2 hours it got soft almost immediately after being rolled out. That doesn't work for kids. The dough got stuck on the rolling pin, counter, and cookie cutters. It was frustrating. It was doable in very small batches, but we still had to work quickly (again, very hard to do with a 4 year old). I also recommend making HALF a recipe. This is more than enough when using small cutter.
I dipped the cookies in Log House Vanilla Candiquik then my daughter sprinkled them. The result was *SPECTACTULAR* Besides the fact that they are way too cute, they actually tasted like Circus Animal Cookies only a million times better.
Make these. They taste amazing. The look darling. Why wouldn't you?
