Family Drive-In

We spent the weekend at the Drive-in. Not any ordinary Drive-in; it was the Pine Cone Drive-In. For the past 3 years my in-laws have set up (actually more like built) a large movie screen in their backyard and invited friends and family to camp, frolic and watch movies under the stars. My oldest daughter has been talking about this event for months!

My FIL chooses 3 movies, showing one feature per night. Prior to the feature presentation he shows a few classic cartoons for the kids. This year it was Chip and Dale (not to be confused with Chippendale's) and Donald Duck. The girls could not have been more excited. Back to the Future, Grease and Roxanne were the features this year. Naturally Grease turned into a sing-a-long. Nothing like 25 adults trying to spit out the words to Hand Jive.

There was a slip-n-slide and pool set up for the kids. Juice boxes, fresh fruit, and Popsicles flowed freely. Ah, life at the grandparents'. We came home needing a shower, scratching our bug bites, exhausted and counting down the days until next year's Drive-In!

I made caramel corn to bring as a movie snack. I used my Grandmother's recipe that is basically identical to this one. My oldest and I put it in waxed paper bags closed with twist ties. There wasn't a crumb left.

Awesome! Do they rent a projector? What about the screen? Or does it get shown on a garage door?

I really love this idea - what a wondeful family tradition. So fun and so special! The kind of even that your kids are going to remember and look back on fondly all their lives ... what cool grandparents!

We've been talking about doing this at our house with Brandon's projector... guess we'll have to get on it! Fun.

That picture of the girls is the sweetest! I had a bad carmel popcorn experience as a child, at a drive-in in fact, and haven't eaten it since. But how can anything with 2 sticks of butter be bad??
