Kool Mandarin Chocolate Cupcakes

Looking for a way to get more sugar, artificial color and chemicals into your child? No, I'm not either but I just had to try this frosting idea from my daughter's preschool teacher. I hadn't heard of it, but I bet you have (I tend to be behind the curve, I'm afraid.) Kool aid flavored frosting? Yup, it makes frosting that tastes like candy in unnaturally bright colors.

I bought orange Kool Aid (you need 1 pack of unsweetened drink powder) a can of white frosting and a boxed cake mix and I was on my way to processed heaven. The frosting tasted just like I added Tang to it. It was very, very zippy but not as neon orange as I'd expected. I paired the frosting with chocolate cake to make a Mandarin Chocolate Halloween treat. The result: very strange. Not quite the subtle orange needed to compliment chocolate. I think vanilla cake would have been better to make a Dreamsicle inspired cupcake.

Bottom Line: A huge hit with kids! Fun for a once-in-awhile treat. Skip the orange/chocolate combo and try something else . . .

I love the way your blog looks. I am making cupcakes for neighbor kid treats and these look awesome. Hallowween is not a holiday of sincere wholesomeness around here.

(The sushi 'nori' is grape fruit leather, the circle shaped stuff from the produce section.. can't wait to see your sushi.)

My kids are going to love these. My daughter insisted I buy Kool aid for her to drink this summer. Guess what, she would not drink a drop. Now I know how to get rid of it:)

LOL -- your first couple of sentences made me burst out laughing! ;)

Very cool idea. If we're brave, we might have to give it a try.
