Little Difference #28

Orchid in Window
Little Difference #28 - Orchids in the Window

Such an interesting phenomena. Why orchids? They are not suited to the climate here in Luxembourg. How did this trend come to be? But there they are, sitting in windows all over this country. 1, 2, 3 even 4 orchids a window. Its very pretty. One more picture here.

The windows here are built with a generously sized marble sills underneath them, perfect for setting plants or nic nacs. Radiators are then placed under the windows. Seems to me the orchids would get fried with all that dry heat. But clearly I'm missing something. I don't know the first thing about taking care of orchids.

There is nothing commonly seen on windowsills in Seattle. The windowsills tend to be too narrow to permanently set anything on them.

Orchids are available in grocery stores, florist shops and even in Ikea. I even have one (thank you Christina!) It's not on the windowsill, though. I'm too afraid that would kill it.

Any orchid experts out there? Please chime in.

My comment has totally nothing to do with flowers on window sills, since that is a small difference between here and there as well!!! But I just have to say I totally love your header photograph, it is just wonderful!!!

Germana seem to love orchids too! Why? I am not sure, and wish I could solve the mystery for you.

Ahhh, finally a difference that's different here, too. No orchids in windows, but they are bountiful in the florist shops.

weird. never seen that in australia. typically nothing is in the window here. Maybe its a sign of exoticness and little something to keep you happy during winter??

I love that this picture shows the metal blinds and the orchid. When you grow an orchid you are supposed to set it on small stones in the saucer with some water to keep the air around it moist. Maybe the radiator makes it more like a greenhouse?

hmmm. I like think it's a very personal message to you - reminding you of your sister who lives in a town where orchids grow like weeds.
miss you.

I just love your little difference posts. Always something of interest. Orchids like the warmth and bright sun as long as it is not direct and blistering hot. We have several plants here in the Pacific Northwest where is is always cold and rainy except for our two months of summer! In addition to window light, we give them light from grow lights as well - they are happy and bloom.

Hmmm, the last orchid that caught my eye in an unlikely location turned out to be a well-done faux. I was hesitating to say this since it's a bit of a wet blanket, but I think the spirit of putting something cheerful in the window remains the same, so even if these are not living orchids it's still a nice habit.

We received one as wedding gift 6 years ago. It lives happily in my kitchen window and blooms every year around our wedding anniversary. I thought for sure it would die shortly after receiving it. So far it is the only plant that is still living in our house. Even when I forget to water it for lengthy amounts of time it still forgives me and perks right back up :)I have recently notice that our neighbors, whose kitchen looks out onto ours, just got an orchid and put it in their window. Maybe a the trend will start here in the PNW.

Orchids like light . . . and they are low-maintenance. That's my guess.

I've never been able to keep one alive either. In Venice, they all put their shoes on the window sills to air out. Each and every window are all these shoes in different sizes and styles. Really interesting.
