Are you taking a vacation this summer? You already know where we're going this summer - home! Some friends of ours have a very exciting vacation planned. They are taking a 2 week trip to California this summer! It is quite a long distance from Luxembourg! To add to the excitement, it will be their daughters' first visit to the States (they are English.)
I'm very excited for them to visit my neck of the woods . . . well, west coast at least. It has been fun to listen to their trip plans and to give them tips on how to talk American - things are cool, not brilliant. They will be doing quite a bit of driving in order to get to all their must sees. In addition to cranking the AC they are creating a play list to listen to in the car to make the drive more enjoyable. How fun, right? A play list inspired by California. Bryce and I contributed a few ideas, mostly obvious ones: Hotel California, Going to California, California Dreaming. But I thought I'd turn it over to you. I'm a Washingtonian, what do I know about the spirit of California?

What songs do you think embody California? What songs capture the spirit of California? Please, please leave a comment . . .or two or three.

Well, I'm a girl from the South, but really. . . how could they not include that old Beach Boys classic -- "I Wish They All Could Be California Girls" or maybe teh updated Katy Perry idea of California girls.
One of my daughter's Italian classmates has a trip planned to CA this summer too. San Fran to LA to San Diego.
I've never been there. . . they look at me like I'm an alien when I tell them that! Ha.
D
Dana beat me with California girls by Katy Perry. Hopefully, by the time you guys make it to Seattle the temps will pick up. My husband was there last week and said it was cold.
hi!
a roadtrip in california brings back memories of a youth well misspent (well at least some vacations).
for the soundtrack:
* San Francisco - Scott McKenzie
* Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers
* Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash
for the sights:
* monterey bay aquarium, a must see with children of all ages
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roaring_Camp_Railroads (and driving to felton via CA35 and CA9 from west menlo park)
well, and many other things, but 2 weeks are so short.

Under the Boardwalk
I love LA (I think it's randy neuman)
And that tacky song by david lee roth
My favorite band is from San Diego - Pinback. Just a random factoid.
Here is a great wiki link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_about_California
A few of my favorites would be:
"Heads Carolina, Tails California" Jo Dee Messina
"All I Wanna Do" Sheryl Crow
There is also a song by the Mamma's and Pappas (I think...) "If your going to San Francisco, be sure to put some flowers in your hair..."
Peace from sunny San Diego
I think Beach Boys definitely say California, Good Vibrations! Great idea with Johnny Cash!! Also love the Sheryl Crow and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Think these will appeal to the younger generation in the car :) The Katy Perry song was already on their play list!
There is an Eric Clapton CD called "on The Road
to Escondido, with J. J. Cage. And the Kingston
Trio's "Tijuana Jail", since it is so in the news!
Jessica, that wiki link is exhaustive! I had a very quick scan of it and found a handful that I thought would be good road trip music:
LA Woman - The Doors
Tom Petty & the Heart Breakers - Into the Great Wide open AND Free Fallin'
The Beatles - Get Back
Soundgarden - Outshined (who says grunge is dead?!)
Beach Boys - Surfin' USA
