European Deodorant
Little Difference #40 - Deodorant

If I were forced to guess, I'd say 80% of American women using solid, stick type deodorant. Yes, I may have the deodorant preference of my fellow American women totally wrong. But based on advertisements and what is available in the shops, I'm sticking with my guess. Here in Luxembourg, however, the vast majority of deodorant is of the roll on or spray variety. In fact I've only seen 2 brands that offer a solid. I think this may be the case all over Europe. A friend who lived in Denmark said that solid deodorant wasn't even available there.

It is a funny little difference. I wonder how one area comes to favor one type and another something different. Interesting.

Naturally I must ask what type of deodorant is used (if any!) where you live?

Friends, this concludes my series of Little Differences. I hope you've enjoyed reading them as much as I've enjoyed discovering them.

Solids have only recently become easy to find, for women, in the UK. I'm totally guilty of having friends and family bring me the my favorite solid.

I buy men's deodorant. Mennen. It's not technically a solid (one of those gets where you turn the wheel a few clicks), but it's clear and rarely ruins black clothing.

You also have to check because often European products are a deodorant, but NOT an antiperspirant. Or is it vice versa? Anyhow--read your labels.

I have used Dove solid forever, but I've recently switched to Tom's of Maine, which is more of a gel-solid.

I have really enjoyed your Little Differences posts, Katy. Thank you so much for sharing these interesting little bits of life abroad with us. I love noticing things like these when we travel. In fact, we were just in Paris and found out about the pizza thing when a waiter at one place rudely told us, "One pizza, one person!" We left and went to another place where we could share (asked the hostess first to make sure). Enjoy your last little bit in Luxembourg and safe travels home.

we have all types in australia - sprays are common here but you can get the solids too.

Deodorant in Australia is mostly of the spray variety. I (for some reason?) had it in my head that spray deodorant was gross and when I first moved here I was reluctant to try it. Spray deodorant is AWESOME. I find that it works SO much better than the stick stuff.

I have so enjoyed reading these little differences. Thanks for sharing them with us! I and most everyone I know use a solid.

Hi there, I've just been reading through your Little Differences posts. Just the sort of thing I love!

Most deodrants here in the UK are sprays, but you can buy solid ones as well.

I was interested to read about pizzas and counting as well. We sometimes eat pizzas with a knife and fork, depends which restaurant you're in! I'd say most you'd use cutlery with though.

Counting... We start with our thumb, but if you just held up your index finger we'd still think you meant 1 and not 2.
