Coffee Filter Butterflies - Tutorial

Scissors and spray bottles ~ the things that a 4 year olds dreams are made of. On Sunday my daughter used our spray bottle as spider spray, spraying the patio to keep the spiders away. Today she used it to make these beautiful butterflies. I hope your child enjoys this project too.

Age:
18 months +

Materials:
Basket Coffee Filters
Markers*
Pipe Cleaners - cut in half
SPRAY BOTTLE
*Markers NOT marked washable will work best. The color will better withstand the water.

Step 1:
Flatten out the coffee filter and let your child decorate it. The more color, the prettier it will turn out. Even a child who is just at the scribbling phase can participate at this step.

Step 2:
Place the decorated coffee filter on a piece of paper or cardboard and let your child (if able) spray it with water. Carefully move the wet filter to a dry spot. Let it dry.

Step 3:
When the decorated filter is dry, pinch it together in the middle.

Step 4:
Fold your pipe cleaner in half and then put it around the pinched part of the coffee filter.

Step 5:
Twist the 2 pipe cleaner ends together. Bend the ends to form antennae.

Viola! My daughter and I made lots of these awhile ago and I tied string to them and hung them from her bedroom ceiling. They really look adorable. We've added a few since then.

You mad genius! I love them. Why on earth would you want to take an art class from me? Ack! You are the master. Beautiful, simple and something a child can actually finish! This will definitely make it up on Crafty Crow.

These are fun. Another variation is to use a clothes pin and the filter through the two "legs" - then let the kids decorate the clothes pin.

Great tutorial! Keep them coming!

ok, I totally forgot you did these! Nice! We still have stacks of colored coffee filters. I had to stash them away so he wouldn't make me twist and hang a billion more butterflies!!
