It is plum season here. At the store there is a larger variety of plums than I've ever seen in one place. I picked up 2 varieties that were new to me. The little yellow plums are called Mirabelle plums. They are a specialty from the Lorraine region of France. The name Mirabelle means beautiful.
The green ones are from the Moissac region of France and are called Reine (Queen) Claude. They are named in honor of Claude the Duchess of Brittany. At 18% sugar, Reine Claudes are thought of as the finest dessert plum. Reine Claude plums are sometimes called Greengage plums.
The girls and I preferred the Reine Claudes. Although both types were sweet, the Reine Claudes have a less dense, more juicy texture. Have you tried either of these?

I bought plums last week that looked like mirabelles but I don't think they were actually them. They were really, really good though.
we got the mirabelle ones here at the farmer's market and enjoyed them. they reminded me of grape tomatoes. I would love to try the others.
i have never had the joy of tasting one of these...lucky you! and they look so pretty
I still daydream about the greengage plum tree at my old apartment in West Seattle (right before I bought the house). My landlady came by to ask why I was letting them rot on the tree - I kept waiting for them to turn purple! Those were the most amazing plums I ever tasted, and your photo reminds me that I always vowed to plant one of my own. It's officially back on the to-do list!
