Must See Movie

Eva and I finished reading The Borrowers just in time for The Secret World of Arrietty. We saw it over February break. It was wonderful! So great to see a quality kids' movie. Will Arnett does the voice of Pod and Amy Poehler of Homily. Carol Burnett does the voice of Hara (Mrs. Drivers in the book) the suspicious house keeper. This character provides lots of laughs!

The animation is beautiful. This story of courage and friendship will delight you and your child. Now, onto The Lorax!

Watched 2 movies this weekend. Really enjoyed this one. He is amazing. It's the kind of movie that stays with you for a while. We just finished this tonight. Heeeeaaavvvvvvvy, strange and violent. Could only directed by him.

Le Ballon Rouge

I was thrilled to read that Le Ballon Rouge, a wonderful, timeless movie, has been re-released. I remember watching it in Elementary School. I think we must have watched it every year. Do you remember it?

It is the story of a little boy, Pascal, and a red balloon with a mind of its own. It was produced in 1956 and was filmed on the streets of Paris. The movie has virtually no dialogue but is set against a beautiful musical score.



I think it will be perfect for our next family movie night. It definitely meets Eva's criteria of no villains. We watched Mary Poppins last week which was wonderful! I'd forgotten what a great movie that is. Again, no villain. We're talking about Pinocchio. I can't remember if there's a villain in it. Anyone know?

No sure if Le Ballon Rouge is available for download from itunes (since our move that has been our favorite way to rent movies.) But I decided that this was a movie I *had* to own. I bought it here. Then I noticed this movie that I also saw in Elementary School. So I bought it too. Nostaglia. I can't get enough. Look through this site, though, it's pretty cool. Foreign, classic and independent films for sale. I remember this one too.

I'd love to know if any of them ring a bell with you.

I've got so much to think about that I find I'm not doing much real thinking at all. Then a brief rush of reality will come over me and I'll feel the enormity of leaving my home, my cat, my routine, my friends, family. Then it will be gone and I return to the comfort of distraction. I had one of those brief moments this weekend while I was out for dinner and a movie with a friend. She is the first person I've said goodbye to. 15 days until Hawaii. 29 days until Luxembourg. Argh - on with distraction!

We saw Burn After Reading. The newest Cohen brothers' movie. It was funny, strange, irreverent and I promise you've never seen Brad Pitt as a character like this one before. It was one of those movies where I catch myself laughing and realize how wonderful it feels to genuinely laugh. All that in only 1 hour and 35 minutes. Totally worth it. And that's not just the 2 margaritas I had with dinner talking.

Picking 15 movies was a hard task for me as I'm not a movie buff at all! Some are current favs and others were favs at certain times in my life. Honestly, the whole time I was choosing, I kept thinking of my husband who is passionate about certain movies. For him, narrowing it down to 15 would be hard.

Into the Theater

Last night I saw Into the Wild. It is a fascinating, thoughtful movie based on a book by John Krakauer and directed by Sean Penn. Bryce and I heard Krakauer speak about Into the Wild at the UW a number of years ago. He read a few book excerpts and also had a slide show of the information he'd collected in researching this true story. At the time we were more interested in Krakauer's most recent book, Into Thin Air but the story of Christopher McCandless and his journey into the wild quickly drew us in. For those of you unfamiliar with the story here is a brief synopsis. It certainly isn't the "feel good story" of the year, but it is exceptionally done and absolutely worth a trip to the theater (even at $9.25 a seat, OUCH). I was left with much to contemplate.
